How to use the Instax Mini 12

Power it up

The Instax 12 runs on two AA batteries (also known as ‘double As’), so why not add some of our Maplin Extra Long Life High Performance AA Batteries to your basket to keep your Instax 12 powered up?

To install the batteries, simply open the side compartment by sliding it down. Make sure you follow the directions inside to place the batteries the right way up. Then close the battery compartment again, turn on the camera using the button next to the barrel of the lens and check the orange LED indicator on the front of the camera. If it’s lit up, you’re good to go!

If it doesn’t light up, make sure the lens is all the way out. If it still doesn’t work, you may need to replace the batteries.

Load the film

When it comes to the Instax 12, you’ll want Fujifilm Instax Mini film. Other sizes, like Instax Square and Wide, won’t work with your camera. We have a whole range of colourful film choices available, so explore your options here!

To install your film of choice, make sure the camera is switched off by pushing the lens back into the camera body and open the latch that holds the back of the camera closed. Inside, you’ll see a yellow mark in the corner. Simply place your film into the Instax 12 so that the yellow mark on the cartridge lines up with the same coloured mark inside the camera.

On the film, there should be a notice saying not to push down on it. Make sure this side of the film cartridge is facing down towards the lens when you install it.

One step left: Turn the camera back on and the darkslide should automatically be ejected. The darkslide protects the film from light, so you won’t need it after the film is installed. If it doesn’t appear, press the shutter to eject it manually.

Taking pictures with the Instax 12

1. Frame Your Shot

  • Utilize the viewfinder to compose your image.
  • Experiment with different angles and perspectives to add creativity to your shots.

2. Adjust Settings

  • The Instax 12 offers basic exposure control through its brightness adjustment dial. Adjust it according to your lighting conditions for optimal results.

3. Focus

  • The Instax 12 has a fixed focus lens, so ensure your subject is within the recommended distance (usually around 0.6m to 2.7m).

4. Capture the Moment

  • Press the shutter button to take a picture. Remember, you only have one chance to get it right, so make it count!

Tips for better results

1. Mind the Lighting

  • Natural light works best for Instax photography. Avoid shooting in overly dark or excessively bright conditions.
  • If shooting indoors, utilize ambient light sources to enhance your images.

2. Experiment with Composition

  • Get creative with your compositions. Try capturing subjects off-centre or play with framing to add interest to your photos.

3. Embrace Imperfection

  • Instant photography is all about capturing moments authentically. Embrace the unpredictability of the medium, including light leaks, vignetting, and other quirks that add character to your photos.

Developing your picture

1. Allow Film to Develop

  • After capturing a photo, be patient and allow the film to develop fully. Avoid shaking or bending the photo during the development process.

2. Store Your Photos Carefully

  • Once developed, store your Instax photos in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading or damage.

3. Share and Enjoy

  • Instant photos are meant to be shared and enjoyed. Display them in photo albums, scrapbooks, or on your wall to relive your memories.
